Thomas P. Withers, one of the highly esteemed and leading citizens of Barry County, Mo., was born June 23, 1842, eight miles northeast of Peirce City in what is now Lawrence County, then a part of Barry County. He is a son of Andrew and Nancy Jane (Hewlett) Withers, who came to Barry County in 1837. Andrew Withers was born on September 14, 1814. He was a member of the Free-soil party, a successful farmer, and a highly respected citizen. He died on December 8, 1884. His wife died on December 8, 1883. Thomas P. was reared on his father’s farm, and received a good common and graded school education. In 1866 he began agricultural pursuits for himself in Jasper County but seven years later came to his present farm. His home farm contains 310 acres, on which is a nice residence and other improvements. Beside this he has a tree claim of 160 acres in Kansas. His marriage with Rebecca, a daughter of Asa Carlin, of Barry County, was celebrated on March 25, 1866. Mrs. Withers was born in Virginia November 19, 1844. Their union has been blessed by the birth of nine children, five girls and four boys. They are Cora E., Avona Gay, Nellie, Burness, Harmon B., Lula B., Stella M., Gilbert and Loren P. In politics Mr. Withers endorses and supports the principles of the National Greenback party.
