Below is a family biography included in The History of Barry County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Dr. James J. Overton, a physician of Monett, Barry Co., Mo., was born in Rush County, Tex., in 1859, and is a son of Dr. Abdon A. and Elizabeth (Pace) Overton. Dr. Abdon A. Overton is of Irish origin, and was born in Maury County Tenn., in 1832. His literary training was finished in Tennessee, but his medical education was received in New Orleans, he having graduated with the degree of M. D. When a young man he went to Rush County, Tex., where he practiced his profession for ten years. In 1866 he came to Barry County, Mo., locating in Shoal Creek Township, where he now owns 210 acres of fine land. Politically, he supports the principles of the Democratic party. His wife was born in Georgia in 1836. They have eight children, viz: Dr. James J.; Robert C., a farmer; Oscar S., a physician at Bois D’Arc, Mo.; Barney P., a farmer; John F.; Knox; Delula and Uda. Dr. James J. received his literary education at Peirce City and in Vanderbilt University, Nashville. In 1879 he began studying medicine under the direction of his father, and in 1880 entered the medical department of Vanderbilt University from which institution he graduated with the degree of M. D. in the spring of 1882. In the same year he located at Exeter, Mo., and began practicing his profession, which he continued at that place for five years. On July 1 1887, he came to Monett, being the second physician to locate in this thriving city. On May 8, 1881, he was united in marriage with Laura Antle, a daughter of Jacob Antle, and to them have been born three children: Milton, Jesse and Edgar. Mrs. Overton was born in 1860; she is a consistent member of the Baptist Church. The Doctor understands his profession, and is one of the promising young physicians of the county. He is a member of the Barry County Medical Association. In politics he is a Democrat, and in religion a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He is a member of the I. O. O. F.
