Below is a family biography included in The History of Barry County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. J. C. McBride was born in 1834, in Kentucky, and at the age of eighteen years came to Missouri. He located for a short time in Jasper County, and then went to Dade County, where he was engaged in farming for eight years, after which he was unsettled for a number of years. In 1868 he was united in marriage with Amanda J. Siddens, of Pottawattomie County, Kas., at which place he was very successfully engaged in farming for nine years. Thence he removed to Eureka Springs, Ark., and later to Bentonville. At the latter place he was engaged in the grocery and provision business. In 1881 he came to Exeter and remained five years, engaged in the grocery trade. He went to California in 1886, but after six months returned to Exeter and resumed the grocery business, which he has very successfully continued. He also owns a half interest in a drug store in Exeter. To him and wife have been born two daughters, Mary Estella and Julia May. Mr. McBride is an enterprising and straightforward citizen. He has been a delegate to numerous political conventions, including county, congressional district and State conventions. Politically he is a Democrat, and is a member of the I. O. O. F., and of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. His wife is a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and their eldest daughter belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
