Below is a family biography included in The History of Barry County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Prof. Hiram P. Sons was born in Tennessee in 1856, and is a son of James and Matilda J. (Church) Sons. James Sons was born in Virginia in 1823, and was taken by his parents to Tennessee, being principally reared in the latter State. It was there that he was married to Matilda J. Church, a native of Tennessee, who was born in 1827. In 1859 he removed his family to Missouri locating in Barry County on the farm which is still his home. Here his wife died in 1875. They were the parents of eleven children, eight of whom are living. Prof. Hiram P. Sons is their seventh child. He was reared and educated in Barry County, first attending the common schools and later the Washburn high school. He commenced his educational career as a teacher in 1875, since which time he has been one of the most popular instructors of the county. In 1879 he was united in marriage with Laura J. Wilcox, who was born in Illinois on July 3, 1859, and to them have been born two children: Nora May and Emma Lena. Prof. Sons owns 140 acres of fine land in Gunter Valley, and is one of the prosperous young men of the county. In politics he endorses and supports the principles of the Democratic party, and in religion is a Missionary Baptist.
