J. M. SIMPSON is a son of Peyton and Jane (Waugh) Simpson; the former was a son of William and Nancy (Hawley) Simpson, the grandparents of our subject. William Simpson was born December 3, 1769, and died June 9, 1854. His wife Nancy was born June 19, 1785, the time of her death is not known. Both she and her husband were natives of Virginia. Peyton Simpson, the father of J. M. was born September 22, 1799, in Virginia. In youth he learned the cooper’s trade and followed it for many years. On November 23, 1828, he started over the mountains to Kentucky. After making short stays in Madison, Fayette, and Christian Counties, he in the fall of 1834 bought a farm three miles west and south of Elkton, where he settled in March 1835, and is still living at the same place. He has been married twice; the first time to Caroline J. Foster, who ended this life August 30, 1840; his last wife was Jane A. Waugh, a native of Christian County. She ended her mortality January 4, 1883. Mr. Simpson is nearly eighty-five years old, hale and hearty, with memory far above the average for one of his age. He is a stanch Democrat and one of the oldest men in the county. J. M. Simpson, the subject of our sketch, was born in Todd County, Ky., July 21, 1847. He was engaged on his father’s farm until January 11, 1877, when he was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Poickron, a native of Kentucky. Four children bless their union, namely: Arthur, Lewis and Lula (twins), and Frank. J. M. Simpson has followed farming all his life. He is a member of the Christian Church, his wife a member of the Baptist Church. He has a farm of ninety-six acres, on which he has now nice improvements, all by his own hand. He is a Democrat in politics and one of the influential citizens of the county.
