Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JESSE HOLBROOK, a native of Owen County, Ky., was born November 7, 1828, and is a son of John and Lucinda (Roach) Holbrook, who were born, respectively, in North Carolina and Virginia. John Holbrook was born March 10, 1800, for many years was a merchant at Lusby’s Mills, and died in June, 1871. Jesse Holbrook was reared on the home farm adjacent to Lusby’s Mills, received a fair education, and for a while taught school, and was also engaged in farming. In January, 1852, he married Miss Rebecca, daughter of G. and Sarah (Howard) Taylor, who descended from an old Virginia family that settled in Owen County, Ky. Seven children have blessed this union. From 1866 to 1870 Mr. Holbrook served as county judge, besides having served as magistrate several years. In 1883 the Farmers’ National Bank of Owenton was organized, with Mr. Holbrook as its president. Its capital stock was $60,000; its present surplus is $12,000, and its average deposits $45,000. The present president of the bank is William Lindsay, while Mr. Holbrook is its cashier. Mr. Holbrook is the owner of 1,200 acres of good land, and is considered one of the best business men of Owen County. He is a member of the Baptist Church.
