Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

J. R. BUCHANAN was born in 1837 in Halifax County, Va., to John and Elizabeth (Rawlett) Buchanan. In 1857 the family, except the mother, who died in Virginia, moved to Kentucky, and settled in Trigg County, where, in 1861, J. R. Buchanan married Miss Elizabeth Jones, and where his father died in 1860. Mr. Buchanan had been engaged in the pursuits of the farm until 1881. In 1865 he purchased a farm in Graves County, on which he resided until recent years. In connection with his farming interests, he has, for several years, been engaged in the tobacco trade, and in 1881 removed to Paducah, where he is devoting his entire attention to this business. He is a member of the Baptist Church, Masonic fraternity, K. of H. and A. O. U. W. He has a family of five children: Ada M., wife of N. B. Stubblefield; Stannie C., Joseph Milton, John H. and Sarah F. Buchanan. The family residence is on Oak Street, between Adams and Clarke Streets.
