My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

ALLEN T. CALDWELL was born July 12, 1825, in Jefferson County, this State. His father, Thomas Caldwell, a Virginian by birth, was one of the first settlers in that county, and lived and died on a farm twenty-one miles east of Louisville. His wife, Hettie Collins, was a native of this State. To them were born ten children. The mother died when our subject was a child, and the father married a second time. Subject was reared to farm work, but after becoming of age, worked in a grist-mill, and saved earnings sufficient to enable him to attend school. Leaving school, he learned the carpenter’s trade, at which he worked several years, being a part of the time in Louisville. On July 11, 1854, he married and came to McCracken County and located on his present farm. His wife was formerly Miss Lucinda Smith, a most estimable lady, and to whose encouragement and kind, devoted nature he attributes much of his success. Our subject has a farm of 201 acres, most of which is under cultivation, with a pleasant cottage residence, orchard and many other valuable and ornamental improvements, all the result of personal management and labor. Mr. Caldwell is a member of the I. O. O. F. and Masonic fraternities.
