Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WILLIAM P. LEE, judge of the Marshall County court, was born in Canton, Trigg Co., Ky., December 25, 1853. His father, B. P. Lee, was a native of Tennessee, Stewart County. He came to Kentucky when a young man, located in Lafayette, Christian County, from whence he moved to Canton, from there to Paducah, and subsequently to Marshall County, where he died in 1865. He was engaged in life in farming and mercantile business. His widow, formerly Martha F. Cotton, of Tennessee, survived him until September 27, 1881. Our subject was the youngest of the family, and when eight years old was brought to Marshall County by his parents, and educated in the common schools and Benton Academy. At seventeen years of age he went to Grayson County, Tex., and for two years was salesman in mercantile houses. Returning to Marshall County he farmed four years, when he came to Benton and completed his law studies under the direction of Judge Philander Palmer, now deceased, and was admitted to the bar in December, 1876. Two years later he was elected judge of the county court, and was re-elected in 1882. He was united in marriage June 21, 1877, to Miss Dora A. Chiles, of Marshall County. There are two children of this union: Donna Deane and Clarice. Judge Lee is a member of the Knights of Honor, of which body he was two years the presiding officer. Since January, 1882, he has been associated in the practice of law with W. W. Robinson, of Mayfield, Ky.
