Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JAMES R. LEMON, Marshall County, was born April 10, 1848, in Guilford County, N. C., a son of Joseph G. and Demarias A. (Helton) Lemon. The father died February 21, 1885, and the mother in 1879. His father was a farmer by occupation. Our subject was one of a family of eight children, and remained upon the home farm until becoming of age. After attending the academy at Benton, the county seat of Marshall County, he engaged in teaching school. In February, 1872, he began business for himself in Benton as a druggist, and continued the same for seven years, during which time he was postmaster. In 1880 he engaged as a traveling salesman for Patrick & Wilson, of Evansville, Ind., in the wholesale book and stationery business, traveling in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri and Arkansas, continuing in the same business for four years. Mr. Lemon is a member of the order of Good Templars, Knights of Honor and a Royal Arch Mason. He was married March 13, 1873, to Miss Cora A. Wilson, of Benton. They lived happily together until March 20, 1885, when she died, leaving three children: Clay G., Luna E. and Maud S. Lemon. He is now in business at Benton as a druggist. He owns some very valuable property, owns a nice residence, is a very successful business man, and merits the esteem of all who know him.
