Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

R. H. JOHNSON was born September 28, 1844, in Hickman County. He is a son of Hudson and Elizabeth (Light) Johnson. The father was born in Tennessee about 1829; he came to Hickman County, and died in 1873, aged sixty-four. The mother was also born in Tennessee; she died in 1871, aged sixty-two. Our subject was reared on his father’s farm. He enlisted in 1861, in Company A, First Kentucky Cavalry, Confederate States Army, and served to the end of the war. On his return he attended school two years, also taught school two years. He then commenced farming on 160 acres of land, given him by his father; this farm he has since well improved, and there he continued to reside until his election to the office of sheriff, in 1882, at which time he removed to Clinton. Mr. Johnson was married in 1868 to Fannie Johnson, of this county. These parents have four children, one son and three daughters.
