My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

HILLERY DAVIS was born in what is now Marion County, Ky., January 8, 1817. He is a son of Nathaniel and Dolly (Mills) Davis. The father was a native of this State, and the grandfather, of English descent, came from Maryland in an early day. The father of our subject ran a still in his native county, and in 1824 he came to this county, and settled in this district. After residing here a short time he moved to Graves County, where he remained until 1839, when he came back to the county. Here he lived until his death, which occurred in 1844. Subject was the fourth of seven children, of whom three are now living: Nathaniel (in Butler County, Mo.), Cynthia (widow of James Jackson), and Hillery, (our subject). The latter remained with his father until about eighteen years of age, and then began life for himself as a boatman on the Yazoo and Tallahatchie Rivers, which he followed for about five years. Returning to this county, he made a settlement where John S. Hardin is now living. He soon after came to his present farm, where he owned at one time 280 acres. A part of this has since been divided among his children. Mr. Davis was married in 1840 to Miss Albina Gardner, a daughter of Clement and Polly (Davis) Gardner. Mrs. Davis was born in Marion County, Ky., and is the mother of seven children, five of whom, two sons and three daughters, are still living. This lady died March 3, 1881. Subject was married the next time October 1, 1882, to Mrs. Mollie D. Smith, a daughter of Noah and Mary (Fields) Norman, a native of Williamson County, Tenn. Mrs. Davis was born in Fulton County, September 5, 1838.
