Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DR. EZIAS L. EARLE, Graves County, was born July 9, 1833, in Hopkins County, Ky.; was taken by his parents, in 1836, to McCracken County, and in 1850 to Pontotoc, Miss., where he remained until 1869. He served through the late war as a member of the Second Mississippi Regiment, and was wounded at the battle of Cold Harbor, Va. His father, Esaias C. B. Earle, a native of South Carolina, settled in Kentucky in an early day, was a soldier in the Mexican war, and died in 1871. He was the son of John Earle, who was the descendant of Gen. John Balis Earle of the Revolution. Subject’s mother was Louisa L., daughter of Dr. John (surgeon at Fort Massac, Ill.), and Lettie (Wilcox) Hammill, of Pennsylvania. To her and husband were born Martha A. (McMackin), John H., Balis E., Matilda M., (Griffith), Mary Y. (Rowzee), subject, Maria L. (Brougher) and Eliza R. (Rowzee). Dr. Earle secured a good English education. He was married June 22, 1871, to Miss Bettie F., daughter of Dr. J. R. Patterson, of Mayfield, Ky. In 1856 he commenced the study of medicine with Dr. C. P. Coffin, of Pontotoc, Miss., with whom he remained three years, after which he studied one year with Dr. Isaac H. Hughey of Oakland. He attended lectures in 1859-60, at Cincinnati, and graduated in 1863, at Richmond, Va. He was for a period of eighteen months assistant surgeon in the hospital at Danville, Va. In 1871 he commenced the practice of his profession in Marshall County, Ky.; went to Arlington, Ky., in 1872; then to Weakley County, Tenn., in 1879, and in 1882 came to Water Valley, Graves Co., Ky., where he is engaged as a physician and oculist. In religion Dr. Earle is a Baptist and in politics a Democrat.
