ABEL CLAPP was born in Graves County, Ky., April 27, 1838, and is the third of nine children, seven boys and two girls, born to Adam and Malinda (Coplin) Clapp, of Alabama and Graves County, Ky., respectively, and of German descent. Abel was reared on the farm and remained with his parents till he was of age, when he started for himself on a farm. In August, 1862, he married Clara O. Thomas, of Graves County, daughter of Jackson and Elizabeth (Watson) Thomas; to their union have been born ten children: William F. (deceased), Linda E., Adam J., Richard A., Eliza F., Charles, Luella, May E., Callona and Etta. Mr. Clapp enlisted in October, 1862, in Company A, Seventh Kentucky, under Capt. Chandler, and served one year, taking part in the battle of Shiloh; he was afterward conscripted, and served three months. Mr. Clapp is now owner of fifty acres of good land, which he is successfully cultivating.
