Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

THOMAS R. ROSWELL, a farmer and stock grower, and a native of Scott County, Ky., was born May 3, 1817. His father, Elijah Roswell, a native of Albemarle County, Va., and a farmer by occupation, first settled in Scott County, Ky., but moved to Fayette County in 1824, where he lived two years, and then moved to Gallatin County, where he died in 1851. He took part in the war of 1812, and married Sarah Houston, of Scott County, a daughter of Anthony and Mary Houston. Six sons and four daughters were born to their union, the subject of this sketch being the second child. John Roswell, paternal grandfather of Thomas R., a native of Virginia, was one of the earliest settlers of Scott County, and died in Franklin County, Ky. Thomas Roswell settled in Gallatin County at the age of nineteen. He was educated in the common schools, and has been a farmer all his life, now owning 300 acres of good land. In 1842 he married Amelia Kirby, of Bourbon County, daughter of Enoch and Delilah Kirby. Two sons and two daughters were born to their union, viz.: William T., Sarah E., James F. and Delilah C. William T. is the only one living. Mr. Roswell is a Democrat, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, as is also his wife.
