Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOSEPH T. ELLISTON, a farmer of Glencoe, Gallatin County, is a native of Grant County, Ky., and was born September 3, 1816. His father, Benjamin Elliston, a native of Virginia, was born near Fredericksburg, November 25, 1770, and was a farmer by occupation. He came to Kentucky in 1786, and first settled in Woodford County, but subsequently removed to Anderson County, where he lived until 1813, then moved to Grant County, where he died December 26, 1846. He was an active participant in the war of 1812, under command of Gen. William H. Harrison. He married Sallie Hiter, of Virginia, a daughter of James and Bettie (Young) Hiter, natives of Virginia. Seven sons and three daughters were born to this union, of whom the subject of this sketch is the youngest. Robert Elliston, the paternal grandfather of Joseph T., a native of Virginia, was one of the earliest settlers of Woodford County, Ky. Joseph T. Elliston was reared on the farm, the pursuits of which he has always followed; he received his education in the common schools of Grant County, and now owns a farm of 460 acres of well cultivated land near Glencoe. October 27, 1842, he married Maria Merrell, a native of Gallatin County, and a daughter of John M. and Mildred (Kirtley) Merrell. Mrs. Elliston died August 4, 1851, a member of the Baptist Church. January 6, 1852, Mr. Elliston married Sarah A. Merrell, a sister of his first wife. Politically Mr. Elliston is a Democrat, and has been magistrate for several years. He is a Master Mason of Tadmor Lodge at Warsaw, and has been a member of the Baptist Church since 1842.
