Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN A. GEX, a farmer and stock grower of Gallatin County, Ky., was born February 15, 1819. His father, Anthony Gex, a native of Switzerland, was born about 1794, and was a farmer by occupation. He emigrated from Vevay, Switzerland, in 1812, and first settled on a farm near Vevay, Switzerland Co., Ind., where he lived until 1816, when he removed to Gallatin County, where he lived until his death, which occurred in 1866. He took part in the war of 1812, under the command of Gen. Harrison. He married Curena Price, of Gallatin County, daughter of John M. and Sarah (Craig) Price, natives of Kentucky. Five sons and four daughters were born to their union, of whom the subject of this sketch is the second child. Louis Gex, the paternal grandfather of John A., also a native of Switzerland, first settled near Vevay, Switzerland Co., Ind., on a farm, but afterward moved to New Harmony, Posey County, where he died. John A. Gex was educated principally in Indiana, and was reared on the farm, the pursuits of which he has followed nearly all his life. He was engaged in merchandise at Ghent, Carroll County, for two years, and now owns 500 acres of well cultivated land. In 1848 he married Henrietta Brooking, daughter of R. E. and Mary M. (Richardson) Brooking, natives of Kentucky. Two sons and three daughters have been born to them, viz.: Anthony (deceased), Brooking, Louis M., Marian (deceased) and Lulie (deceased). Mr. Gex is a Master Mason, a member of Ghent Lodge, of Ghent, Carroll County, and he is also a member of the Christian Church.
