Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

CAPT. WILLIAM A. SHUCK was born April 16, 1839, in Shelby County, Ky., where he grew to manhood, and in 1861 entered the Buckner Guards, as a private, and after a service of one year was breveted second lieutenant in the Eighth Kentucky Cavalry, and in 1862 was promoted to a captaincy in Morgan’s command. He was captured with his chief on his famous raid through Ohio, and remained a prisoner of war at Johnson’s Island until the termination of hostilities. His father, John Y. Shuck, was also a native of Shelby County, where he died in 1845, at the age of thirty-two years. He was the son of John Shuck, of Shelby County, one of the early settlers of the commonwealth. Subject’s mother, Martha F., daughter of David and Nancy (Barbee) Lyle, of Shelby County, died in 1868, aged forty-nine years. To her and husband were born subject and Elizabeth P. (Mason). Subject was favored with a good English education and is still an extensive reader. On March 1, 1870, he was married to Lida, daughter of B. J. Kenneday, of Oxford, Miss, (died November 15, 1870). He was next married May 12, 1876, to Miss Bertha, daughter of William L. and Mary (Kickman) Alexander, of Fulton County, and to them have been born Mary L., Lyle Y. and Fannie H. Capt. Shuck is a farmer, having 100 acres of good land. He is a member in good standing in the K. of H., and in politics is a Democrat.
