Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

THE BROWN FAMILY. James Brown removed from Virginia to Kentucky, and was a surveyor in the State in an early day; he was a minister of the Gospel of the Presbyterian faith. He married Margaret Hopkins, and to them were born nine children, viz.: William, John, James, Archibald, Mary, Elizabeth, Daniel, Robert and Harvey.

Archibald Brown, the progenitor of this (the Fulton County) branch of the family, was born in Mercer County, Ky., December 7, 1791, and died May 2, 1870. He was married April 15, 1813, to Mary Culton, who bore him three children: William C., born July 26, 1814; Margaret A., born January 27, 1816; John R., born October 24, 1817. His wife died, and August 26, 1826, he married Sarah M. Culton. This union was blessed with six children, as follows: James N., born June 12, 1827; Thomas D., born October 5, 1828; Elizabeth E., born May 18, 1830; Archibald H., born February 15, 1832; Benjamin F., born April 26, 1836; Daniel H., born August 17, 1837, and died of wounds received at the battle of Paducah, April 3, 1864.

Thomas D. Brown, son of Archibald and Sarah M. (Culton) Brown, was born in Mercer County, Ky., and was brought by his parents to this county in 1829, where he grew to manhood and where he still resides. He was married May 27, 1859, to Margaret D., daughter of James and Nancy (Culton) Brown, of Fulton County. To them have been born Martha A., in 1859, and married February 7, 1883, to P. H. Browder; Eliza beth E., born in 1861; Daniel H., born in 1864; Sarah N., born in 1866; Robert B., born in 1869; James A., born in 1872; John W., born in 1874.
