Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

LEWIS ROPER was born March 25, 1824, in Woodford County, Ky., and was brought by his parents in 1828 to Fulton County, where he has since resided. His father, Joseph Roper, was born in the vicinity of Richmond, Va., and died about 1836, at the age of sixty-six years. Joseph was twice married, and his union with his first wife resulted in the birth of Martha (Polsegrove.) He next married Mildred Shouse, of Woodford County, Ky., and from this union sprang Clemency (Scearce), Dutoy, Samuel H., Joseph, Andrew J., John, Elam, William H., subject, Edward, Lucretia (McGehee), Lucy A. (McGehee), and Henrietta (Thompson). On February 8, 1844, subject married Miss Rosella M., daughter of Archibald and Mary (Hawkins) Reed, of Fulton County, and to them have been born Joseph A., John C., Mary L. (Lawson), Lucy C. (deceased,) Sarah E. (deceased), Lewis (deceased), Anabell (deceased), Martin A. (deceased), Anna (deceased), Rosetta (deceased) and William R. Mrs. Lawson lives with her parents and has one son, John C. Mr. Roper is a farmer, owning 160 acres of fine land. He is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and is identified with the Democrats.
