JOHN W. BLYTHE was born May 1, 1845, near Paris, Tenn., and was the eldest child of William J. and Sarah P. (Howard) Blythe. The father was a native of North Carolina, and was of Scotch descent: the mother of Stewart County, Tenn., and of Irish descent. The father came to Henry County about 1823. Subject received a fair education at the academy at Paris, Tenn., He taught one term in Johnson County, Ill. November 23, 1861, he enlisted in Capt. J. N. Stockton’s company, which was afterward consolidated with the Sixth Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. He participated in numerous skirmishes and battles, among which might be mentioned Corinth, Miss. He was in the service one year, when he was honorably discharged on account of disability. In 1864 he commenced clerking in a store in Paducah, where he remained one year. In 1865 he went to Decatursville, Tenn., where he embarked with the firm of Bondurant & Blythe, in the dry goods business. In 1866 he purchased his partner’s interest and moved the store to Locust Grove, Calloway County. In the fall of 1869, he went to Lone Elm, Tenn., where he formed a partnership with a Mr. Howard. This firm continued in business until the spring of 1871. In the fall of the same year he came to Fulton and embarked in business there, first with a partner and subsequently alone. October, 1883, he took M. L. Farmer in as a partner, and the firm are now doing business under the name of Blythe & Farmer. He has also been engaged in the cotton and tobacco business. Mr. Blythe was married in November, 1866, to Miss Emma A. Wadlington, a native of Trigg County, Ky., and a daughter of Wayne and Mary A. (Carloss) Wadlington. This lady died July 3, 1880, and Mr. Blythe was next married to Miss Sarah E. Wadlington, a sister of his former wife. One child, Emmet A., is the result of this union. Mrs. Blythe is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Mr. Blythe is a member of the K. of H. and Masonic fraternities. He has served as trustee of the town of Fulton.
