My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN A. STUBBS was born September 12, 1841, in Fulton County, Ky. His father, Moses Stubbs, was a native of Tennessee, but came to this part of the Purchase in an early day, and can be classed with the pioneers of Fulton. Dennis Stubbs, subject’s grandfather, immigrated to the county when it contained but a few sparse settlements, and located about ten miles southeast of Hickman, on the Dresden Road, where he died about 1855 or 1860. The father of subject resided upon the same farm until his death in 1863. The mother is still living in the suburbs of Hickman. Mr. and Mrs. Stubbs reared a family of eight children, named as follows: William, deceased; James, deceased; Elizabeth, deceased; John A., subject; Catherine, deceased; Poter F., Berry and Julia. John A. lived at the paternal home until 1862, when he enlisted in Company I, Seventh Confederate Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, and served in the Western campaign for three years, at the end of which time he joined Forrest’s cavalry, with which he remained until taken prisoner at Selma in 1865. After a short imprisonment he was paroled, and, coming back to Fulton County, engaged in farming on the old homestead, which is his present place of residence. He was united in marriage in April, 1867, with Mary, daughter, of Hinton and Sarah Parham, by whom he had one child, Mary. Mrs. Stubbs died in March, 1866, aged twenty-four years, and Mr. Stubbs next married, in 1873, Penny, daughter of Hilman King, of North Carolina. To this marriage have been born three children, John O., Katie and Ada. In politics Mr. Stubbs is a Democrat.
