Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JAMES A. HERRING was born March 23, 1844, in Fulton County, Ky., where he was reared to manhood. In 1861 he entered the army, where he served as lieutenant. In 1874 he removed to Obion County, Tenn., where he remained until 1884, when he returned to Fulton County, Ky., where he at present resides. His father, Marcus L. Herring, a native of Rutherford County, Tenn., was born in 1810 and is still living. He is the son of Abraham Herring, a native of North Carolina. Marcus L. married Margaret A., daughter of Archibald Brown, of Fulton County, Ky., and from this union, sprang Fannie, Abraham, Admiral B., Maria L. (Crawford), subject, William T., Winfield S., Marcus L., Jr., Sarah D., Lycurgus, Claudius and Robert A. In youth, subject procured a good English education. He was married, February 7, 1867, to Miss Nancy E., daughter of William and Sarah (Mayes) Bondurant, of Fulton County, Ky., and to them have been born William L., Edward W. and Una L. Subject is a farmer, having ninety-two acres of very productive land, which he is successfully cultivating. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity. In religion he is a Methodist and in politics an old-line Whig.
