My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

GEORGE WARREN, editor and proprietor of the Hickman Courier, was born in Murfreesborough, Tenn., May 3, 1840. He is the youngest of a family of four children born to P. G. and Elizabeth (Pybass) Warren, both natives of Tennessee. William Warren, subject’s grandfather, was a native of North Carolina; he left that State in an early day, emigrating to Tennessee, where he died about the year 1850. Subject’s maternal grandparents were of French descent, and died when subject was in his infancy. P. G. Warren was a journalist and established one of the first papers in Murfreesborough; he was one of the original founders of the Nashville American, the leading paper in Tennessee at the present time; he died, in 1874, at the age of sixty-four years. The mother died in 1856, aged thirty-nine years. Subject received his early education in his native town, and at the age of fourteen entered Andrew College at Trenton, where he remained four years. After leaving school he entered the printing office of the old Nashville American and Nashville Gazette, where he remained for several years, working in different offices at intervals. In 1860 he came to Hickman and in company with his brother, E. K. Warren, established the Courier, of which he assumed complete control one year later. He has conducted the paper ever since that time, and is one of the oldest journalists in the Purchase. The Courier is an independent Democratic sheet, and has a very large circulation. Mr. Warren was married December 27, 1869, to Mollie, daughter of John and Mary F. (Binford) French. Two children have been born to this union: Nannie and Maggie. Mr. Warren has at different times been called to fill various official positions; he held the office of city judge, and was master commissioner for a period of four years. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity and K. of H., and his wife is a member of the Episcopal Church.
