Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DR. FRANCIS M. USHER, a native of Christian County, Ky., was born July 30, 1836, and was reared to man’s estate at the place of his birth, where he remained until 1860, when he removed to Moscow, in Hickman County. His father, Dr. James H. Usher, was born in Virginia in 1806, came to Kentucky in youth and is still living. He is the son of David Usher, a Virginian. Dr. James H., married Lucinda Compton of Washington County, Ky. She was born in 1810, and died in 1876. Their children are Dr. James H., Edmund C., William D., subject, Sarah R. (Proctor), America V. (Nance), Mary R., Ophelia (Northington), Josephine H. (Nance), George W., Emma E. (Gaines) and Marietta (Scott). Dr. Usher was married December 24, 1868, to Miss Mary L., daughter of Rev. N. N. Cowgill of Fulton County, and this union was blessed with the birth of one son, Frank, after which, Mrs. Usher died in 1870. October 28, 1874, subject was next married to Miss Julia A., daughter of Charles and Sallie (Thomason) Carpenter of Fulton County, and to them Mary L. has been born. In 1856 subject commenced the study of medicine with Dr. J. C. Whitlock of Newstead, Ky., with whom he remained three years. He attended the University of Pennsylvania in 1857 and graduated in 1859. Dr. Usher practiced his profession six years at Moscow, two years at Hopkinsville, and in 1868 settled at his present place in Fulton County, where he is engaged in an extensive and successful practice. He also engaged in farming, owning 500 acres of valuable land. Dr. Usher is a member of the Masonic fraternity and a Democrat.
