My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

C. HUGHLETTE WILSON, attorney of Fulton County, was born in Hickman, August 24, 1858, and is a son of John A. and Jennie M. (Downing) Wilson, both natives of Kentucky, and both living in Fulton County. Mr. Wilson, Sr., has been a man of considerable prominence, having served nineteen consecutive years as county clerk, also filling the office of city collector at different times. Our subject early manifested a taste for books, which his parents encouraged by giving him the benefit of competent private instruction. He also attended the Hickman High School a number of years and acquired by diligent application to his studies an education surpassed by few of his age. At the age of fourteen he entered the county clerk’s office as deputy under his father, retaining that position for a period of seven years, during which time he discharged his duties with satisfaction to all. He commenced the study of law in 1876, and later entered the law department of the Louisville University, where he remained five months, at the end of which time, he came back to Hickman and entered upon the active practice of his profession. He was admitted to the bar June 18, 1880, receiving his license from Judge William L. Jackson of Louisville. He was elected city attorney in 1881, being the last one to fill that position; was also city assessor one year, and it is said he made the only complete assessment returned in fifteen years. Starting in life a poor boy, he has already accumulated a handsome property and has a future full of promise. He votes with the Democratic party, and is a strong advocate of prohibition.
