Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

R. M. SOUTHER was born in Oldham County, Ky., February 25, 1840, and is a son of Henry and Nancy (Tandy) Souther. Henry Souther was a son of Henry Souther, Sr., was born in Oldham County April 1, 1811, was a farmer, and died in 1842. Henry Souther, Sr., was a native of Virginia, and immigrated to Kentucky at an early day. Nancy (Tandy) Souther was born in 1818 and was a daughter of Roger and Mary (Wayland) Tandy, natives of Oldham County. R. M. Souther received his education in the common schools of Carroll County, Ky. He has made farming his chief occupation, and is also a breeder of fine cattle. He owns a splendid farm of 240 acres, valued at $40 per acre. In 1862 Mr. Souther enlisted in the Confederate Army under Gen. Morgan’s command. He married Miss H. J. Vandaren, daughter of Josephus and Elizabeth (Allnutt) Vandaren. Josephus Vandaren is a farmer of wealth and influence in Owen County. The grandparents of Mrs. Souther came from Virginia, and were highly respected pioneer settlers of Kentucky. The Vandaren family is a prominent family in northern Kentucky. Mr. and Mrs. Souther have a family of nine children, viz.: Lizzie, Nannie, Scott, Hattie, Sallie, Mary, Van, Maud and Roberta H. Mr. Souther is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and is the Tyler of his lodge. Mr. Souther has always been a stanch member of the Democratic party.
