Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

CORNELIUS DEWEESE, a prominent farmer and stock grower of Carroll County, Ky., was born in Mercer County, Ky., October 23, 1809, and is the sixth of a family of nine children born to Matthew and Susannah (Newton) Deweese; the former, a farmer, died in 1819, and his wife died in 1852. Cornelius Deweese now owns 909 acres of fine land in Hunter’s Bottom, on the Ohio River, and is sole owner of the Farmers’ Tobacco Warehouse, of Louisville, Ky., and owns the Arlington Hotel. He began as a clerk with Parmele of Louisville, was in the clothing business in 1833 with Forster & Co., and from 1834 until 1839 he kept a hotel on Fourth Avenue, Louisville, Ky., known as the Wall Street House, after which he was in the commission business, and has been very successful. Retiring from business he bought a farm in Carroll County, which is carried on by his son. Mr. Deweese married Miss Hannah Grushon, daughter of John and Annie (Grushon) Grushon, of Frederick County, Md., and to this union thirteen children have been born, viz.: Elizabeth, Cordelia, Cornelius, Virginia, Hannah, Florence, Theodore, Arthur, Ella, Katie and James, and two deceased. Mrs. Deweese died March 28, 1884. Mr. Deweese is a member of the I. O. O. F. Politically he is a Democrat.
