Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WILLIAM P. GATLIN, Calloway County, was born at Iron Mountain Furnace, Tenn., June 6, 1859. His father, George W. Gatlin, is a native of the same place. The latter has engaged during life in farming and various mercantile pursuits in Tennessee. During the war he captained a company organized by himself in the Fiftieth Tennessee Regiment. He was wounded severely in a skirmish which occurred in the engagement at Forts Henry and Donelson. His wife, Minerva Gray, is a daughter of Gen. James A. Gray, who served with distinction during the Mexican war. To them were born seven children. Our subject successively attended the various schools in his native State, Tennessee, and in the State of Kentucky. Concluding his scholastic course he entered upon the stage of business life as clerk in a retail store. After seven and a half months he began for himself, the mercantile business in September 1879, in the town of Murray, Calloway Co., Ky., where he has since resided. Mr. Gatlin started in life with but a few dollars, but by his indefatigable industry, energy and business sagacity has built up a lucrative business, and placed himself among the prominent citizens and merchants of Murray. October 1, 1883, he married Miss Effie Oury, of Murray, Ky. They are the parents of one child, Gray. Mr. Gatlin is a member of the K. of H. and A. F. & A. M., and is an active supporter of the temperance cause.
