Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

THOMAS M. GRAVES, Calloway County, was born September 18, 1824, in Marshall County, Tenn., the youngest of ten children born to Samuel and Ellen (Wilson) Graves The father was a farmer, was a native of Georgia, whence he moved in 1800 to Tennessee. He died in 1879 at the advanced age of eighty-nine years. Our subject was reared on a farm, but at the age of nineteen began reading medicine with Dr. Moore of Bedford County, and practiced for several years; moved to Kentucky in 1852; in 1854 went to Nashville, attended one course at the Nashville College. After several years’ practice in his native county, he came in 1852 to Calloway County, and located on a farm four miles northwest of town, and has since been in active practice, and stands high in his profession. He is a member of the A. F. & A. M., and heartily indorses the temperance movement. He has been married three times. His first wife was Miss Martha Fleming; she died soon after marriage. By his second wife, Susanna M. Wilson, there are three children living: James A, Ula and Cora. The doctor’s present wife is Miss Nannie E. Harding; this union has given three children: Wildy H., Rube E. and Polly C.
