Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

PLEASANT A. VANCE was born July 24, 1824, in Todd County, Ky., where he grew to manhood. In 1851 he removed to Muhlenburgh County, and in 1857 came to Ballard County, where he now resides. His father, John Vance, a native of South Carolina, was born in 1767, removed to Todd County, Ky., in 1801, was high sheriff there and died in 1834. He was the son of David, a Scotchman, who served in the American Revolution. John married Martha, daughter of Silas Davidson, of South Carolina, and this union was blessed by the birth of Daniel W., William, Samuel, James, John, Andrew, Massena, subject, Elizabeth (Vance), Ruth (Chesnut) and Jane. Mrs. John Vance died in 1834, aged fifty-two years. In youth subject procured a common school education, but is an extensive reader of good books and standard literature. He was married March 9, 1849, to Miss Althea A., daughter of John and Cicely (Thomas) Halsell, of Todd County, born in 1831 and died in 1875, and to them were born Olive A. (Wilkinson), Emma A. (Duke), Samuel A., William E., Beulah and Lena E. Subject is a farmer, having 100 acres of land in a good state of cultivation. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, a Baptist and a Democrat.
