Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

MALACHI McCOLPIN was born February 21, 1836, in Todd County, Ky., where he was reared to manhood, and in 1860 came to Ballard County, where he has since resided. His father, Charner H. McColpin, a native of Todd County, was born in 1810 and died in 1870. He was the son of Joseph, of North Carolina, who came to Todd County prior to the year 1800, where he died in 1853 at the age of eighty-three years. His father was a native of Ireland, was a soldier in the American Revolution, and died in Todd County, Ky. Charner H. married Martha E., daughter of Amos and Betsey (Henderson) Jones, of Todd County, born in 1814, and still living, and to them were born Joseph F., subject, Miranda (Wolfe), Martha E. (Lindsey), Thomas B., Charner H., Jr., Samuel H., Barbara J. (Thompson), Nancy H. (Slayton), and John G. Subject was married March 13, 1860, to Miss Margaret B. Dean, of Ballard County, born July 10, 1845, and this union was blessed with one child, Ovelia (Shepherd, deceased). Subject has been a successful tobacco factor and farmer, and is now engaged as a general dealer in livestock. He has served as constable and deputy sheriff, and is a member of the Masonic fraternity, a Baptist and a Democrat.
