Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DR. J. M. PECK, of Ballard County, was born October 23, 1857, in Graves County, Ky. He is a son of J. M. and Melinda (James) Peck. The father was born in Massachusetts, and in 1830 came to Graves County, and settled in Mayfield, where he carried on the blacksmith trade, and was admitted to be one of the best workmen in his time. He died February, 1873, aged sixty-four. The mother was born in Henry County, Tenn., and is now living in Arlington. In 1875 our subject commenced the study of medicine under the preceptorship of Drs. R. T. Hocker and A. T. Hobbs; two years later he entered Clinton College, and graduated therefrom in 1880, with the highest honors of his class. Going to Nashville, he entered the medical department of the Vanderbilt University, and graduated in 1882. He then came to Arlington, where he has since been engaged in the practice of his profession; he is also carrying on the drug business in company with Dr. Hocker. This business was established in the spring of 1884. The Doctor is a member of the Southwestern Kentucky Medical Association, and of the Graves County Medical Society. He was married October 23, 1883, to Miss Minnie I. Dupree, of Arlington. They are members of the First Baptist Church.
