GEORGE L. PORTER, Ballard County, was born December 12, 1813, in Fauquier County, Va. The following year his parents moved to Henry County, Ky.; there they remained until 1881, when they removed to Columbus, Ky., coming on a flat-boat; they at once settled in the vicinity of Arlington and engaged in farming. His father, Eli Porter, died in 1832, aged sixty-two. In 1834 George secured a position as clerk on a flat-boat (which carried a large stock of dry goods), running from Columbus to Natchez, which position he filled for three years; he then accepted a position as a salesman in a dry goods store in Columbus, where he remained one year, after which he went to Pine Bluff, Ark., and was clerk there in a similar business fifteen months; he then went to Newcastle, Ky., and remained there several months with his sick brother; he then went to Cape Girardeau, Mo., where he remained as sales man for about seven years. In 1847 he re turned to Columbus, and accepted a situation as dry goods salesman, which he retained twenty-five years, but on account of ill health was obliged to resign; in 1881 he came to Arlington, Ballard County, where he has since resided.
