Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DR. G. W. TURNEY was born April 19, 1849, in DeKalb County, Tenn. He is a son of Joseph and Lucinda (Groom) Turney, who were born in Tennessee. The father was engaged in agricultural pursuits and the rearing of livestock; he died in 1878, aged forty-nine; the mother died in 1880, aged fifty-two. Dr. Turney was reared on his father’s farm, and was educated in the schools of the neighborhood. At the age of twenty-four he commenced the study of medicine under the preceptorship of Dr. J. M. Turney, and studied with him twenty-two months, after which he went to Nashville and attended the medical department of the Vanderbilt University five months; he then returned to his native county, where he practiced medicine about six months; then returning to the university, he graduated in 1873; he then went to Warren County, Tenn., where he engaged in the practice of his chosen profession. September 15, 1881, he came to Boswell, where he has since been engaged in practicing and carrying on the drug business. Dr. Turney was married March 19, 1880, to Miss Nannie Hutson, of Ballard County. Two children have blessed this union, one son and one daughter. The doctor and his wife are members of the Baptist Church.
