Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

CHARLES N. B. ROLLINGS, an active business man of Ballard County, was born October 8, 1828, in Christian County, Ky., where he grew to manhood; he came with his parents in 1846 to Ballard County, where he has since resided. His father, John T. Rollings, a native of Halifax County, Va., died about 1852, aged about fifty-six years. He was twice married; first to Elizabeth Simmons of Virginia, to whom were born John A., subject, Nathaniel L., Margaret (Parrum) and James W. To his second wife were born Martin V., Francis M. and Sarah (Elliott.) Our subject received but a common education in youth, but has improved his opportunities by reading good books and papers. He was married December 31, 1856, to Miss Ann R., daughter of Richard and Prudence (Chapell) Bugg, of Ballard County, and to them were born Lula M. (Bailey), Dr. Jefferson D., Charles R., James W., Elizabeth and Lena. Subject is a farmer, owning 1,343 acres of good land, in good condition, 450 of which are in a high state of cultivation. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and an active member of the Christian Church, and in politics an uncompromising Prohibitionist.
