Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

N. B. LAYLE was born in Grant County, Ky., October 25, 1847, and is the twelfth child of a family of thirteen children born to John and Margaret (McCullick) Layle. John Layle was born in Fayette County, Ky., in 1800. He was engaged in agricultural pursuits all his life, and died in 1870. He was a son of Peter Layle, who served in the war of 1812. Mrs. Margaret Layle was also a native of Grant County, Ky. N. B. Layle, with the exception of two years, 1867 and 1868, which were spent in Missouri, farming, has always lived in his native county. He was educated at the schools in his neighborhood, and was engaged in farming for several years. He was in the marble business at Williamstown for four years, and was very successful. May 11, 1871, he married Nannie Carnes, of Grant County, Ky. Two children have blessed this union, Mollie and Gracie, who are noted for their beauty and many fine qualities. Mrs. Nannie Layle is a daughter of John and Sarah (Skirvins) Carnes. She and her daughter, Mollie, are strict members of the Baptist. Church. Mr. Layle is also a member of the same church, and of the Good Templars lodge located at Williamstown. Politically he is a Democrat.
