Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOSEPH L. HENDRIX, a farmer and stock raiser, and native of Grant County, Ky., was born May 19, 1845. His father, William Hendrix, a native of Carter County, Tenn., and a farmer, represented Grant County in the Legislature in 1844-45, and was one of the signers of the State Constitution of 1849; was also magistrate for many years. He settled in Grant County in 1833 on a farm near Elliston Station, where he lived until his death, which occurred in 1875. He married Catherine Heart, of Carter County, Tenn., daughter of Leonard and Mallie (Goodman) Heart, who bore him four sons and five daughters, the subject of this sketch being the youngest son. John Hendrix, grandfather of Joseph L., was a native of Virginia, and settled in Carter County, Tenn., where he died. Joseph L. Hendrix has always followed farming, and owns a farm of 400 acres, of which 300 lie in Grant County, all well cultivated and well stocked. In 1870 he married Gilla Rosell, of Gallatin County, daughter of Joseph F. and Liza (Brock) Rosell. She died in 1873, and in 1883 Mr. Hendrix married Nannie Rogers, of Grant County, daughter of Samuel and Lucinda Rogers. Mr. Hendrix is a Democrat. His wife is a member of the Christian Church.
