Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JAMES D. McMILLAN was born in Gallatin, now Grant County, Ky., June 26, 1856, and is the second son of Abram and Dulcinea (Kuhn) McMillan, natives of Virginia, the former, now living in Kansas, immigrated to Gallatin. James D. McMillan was reared in Grant County, attended college at Harrisburg, Owen County, in 1875-77, and taught the intermediate studies of the college one year. In 1879-80 he taught a private school at Bentonville, Ark., and, returning to Grant County, now teaches school during the fall and winter, and farms in the summer. He owns thirty-five acres of land, was deputy sheriff in 1881-82 under C. Vallandingham, and is now magistrate. In 1878 he married Miss Lizzie Thompson, daughter of Ed Portor Thompson, a prominent educator of Owen County. She died in 1879, and in 1882 Mr. McMillan married Miss Barbara E. Clark, of Grant County, daughter of Bryan P. and Mary F. (Webb) Clark, natives respectively of Grant County, Ky., and North Carolina. Three children have been born to them, viz.: Marcella Kate, Albert C. and Elbert P.
