Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

PHILIP B. SPENCE, a native of Nashville, Tenn., was born October 14, 1836, and is a son of Brent and Elizabeth (Shute) Spence, natives, respectively, of the northern part of Ireland and Tennessee. He was reared in Nashville, and educated at Princeton College, New Jersey. In April, 1861, he entered the Confederate Army, and was commissioned second lieutenant under Lieut.-Gen. Polk. After the battle of Chickamauga he was promoted to the command of a regiment of cavalry, and subsequently was in command of all the cavalry around Mobile, until they surrendered in 1865 to Gen. Canby; at the end of the war he was commissioned colonel. In 1866 he went to Cincinnati, and became a member of the firm of Duckworth, Spence & Co., commission merchants, making his home in Newport. In 1868 Mr. Spence married Miss Virginia Berry, daughter of Maj. James T. Berry (deceased). Two children have blessed their union: Brent and Berry, aged respectively, twelve and eight. In April, 1886, Mr. Spence was appointed postmaster at Newport.
