Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DR. F. J. LOCKE was born in London, England, in 1829, to John B. and Ann (Richards) Locke, the latter a daughter of Thomas Richards, a native of Exeter, England. John B. Locke, father of our subject, was a merchant in London, and immigrated to Newport, Ky., in 1849, where he was engaged in the mercantile business. He was treasurer of the school board of Newport, Ky., many years, and was an Episcopalian in religion. Dr. F. J. Locke was educated at Christ College, London, and at the Eclectic Medical Institute, Cincinnati, Ohio, where he graduated in 1864. In 1870 he was appointed professor of materia medica, which position he still holds. He has practiced twenty-two years in Newport, where he has been city physician, and a member of the school board. He enlisted in the Thirty-third Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, was captain until March, 1862, when he was appointed major of the same regiment. July 16, 1862, he was commissioned lieutenant-colonel, served until September, 1863, when he resigned on account of disability, and entered upon the practice of his profession. In March, 1861, he married Miss Sarah Glover, daughter of Azil Glover, of Portsmouth, Ohio. She was born in 1835, and died in 1885, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Six children were born to them: William O., Frank, Lizzie, Fannie, Bertha and Georgie. Mr. Locke is a Royal Arch Mason, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
