J. M. HAMMETT, proprietor livery and feed stables, is a native of Massachusetts, and was reared to the farming industry. In 1864, and at the age of twenty-one, he engaged in the whaling trade, with which he was actively connected for about two years, during which time he sailed the Atlantic, South Pacific, Indian and Southern Seas, visiting all the important points in the southern hemisphere, chief among which were Australia, St. Helena, the Celebes, the Azores, Cape De Verde, Mauritius, etc. He then retired from that business, and returned to his native State, and in 1869 located here, and engaged actively in the farming and stock-raising business, which he carried on successfully for several years, retiring from it to take up the present business, which he very ably represents. In 1862, he married Miss Adelia Tilton, of his native State. They have a family of two daughters—Mary E. and Sarah E.
