John H. Whittington, who in April, 1907, was appointed chief of police of Creston, was born at Salem, Peoria county, Illinois, in 1872, and is the fourth in order of birth in a family of five children whose parents were John A. and Sarah (Hamilton) Whittington, both of whom were of English lineage. The father, a native of Tennessee, made farming his occupation through many years or until 1894, when he removed to Creston, where he worked in mechanical lines. He held membership in the Methodist Episcopal church and his wife was at all times honorable and upright. His political allegiance was given to the democracy. He died October 12, 1903, at the age of sixty-two years, and is yet survived by his widow, who is now living in Creston, at the age of sixty-four years. She, too, belongs to the Methodist Episcopal church. In their family were the following: Minnie, now the wife of George Garrison, engaged in the real-estate business in Creston; William A., a drayman at Central City, Nebraska; Carrie E., the wife of Elmer E. Thompson, a real-estate dealer at Indianola, Nebraska; John H., of this review; and Frank M., living in Creston.

John H. Whittington was a pupil in the public schools at Lenox, Iowa, and when not busy with his text-books he worked at farm labor prior to attaining his majority. Coming to Creston in 1894 when a young man of twenty-one years, he here performed such business duties as came to him, doing ably and conscientiously whatever his hand found to do. In April, 1907, he was appointed chief of police of Creston and is now serving in that capacity, with three patrolmen and one night watchman under his direction. He is proving a capable officer, courageous and fearless in the discharge of his duty and standing as a stanch supporter of law and order.

On the 29th of July, 1900, Mr. Whittington was married to Miss Clema B. James, whose birth occurred in this county in 1881, her parents being Joseph and Martha James. Her father is a retired farmer, now living in Creston, and a veteran of the Civil war, having displayed his loyalty to his country on southern battlefields, while in business life he gave evidence of an industry and enterprise that constituted the basis of his success. Three children have been born unto Mr. and Mrs. Whittington; Ruth, born in 1901; John, in 1903; and Belle, on the 31st of August, 1905. Mr. Whittington holds membership with the Modern Woodmen of America and with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. His political endorsement is given to the republican party and he is much interested in its success and growth.
