Below is a family biography included in The History of Switzerland County, Indiana published by Weakley, Harraman & Co. in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. JOHN W. SMITH, M. D., a physician of the homoeopathic school, and surgeon, has lately become a resident of Vevay. He is a native of Canada, born in 1857, and educated at St. Catharine’s Collegiate Institute, at which he graduated in 1879. He studied medicine at Tobsonburg and attended lectures at the university of Buffalo, graduating at this institution in 1883. The previous year he began practice in East Buffalo and from thence he went to Chicago, graduating from the Homoeopathic Institute of that city in February, 1885. From Chicago Dr. Smith came direct to Vevay, where he is making rapid progress in establishing a lucrative practice in his profession. Duncan and Charlotte (Gilchrist) Smith, parents of our subject, are natives of Scotland, his father being a retired merchant and grain dealer.
