George W. Pool, blacksmith, and one of the prominent farmers of the county, was born in Maryland, October 23, 1837. His educational advantages were very limited, and at the age of eighteen he began learning the blacksmith’s trade, and afterward followed this until 1861. In July of that year he enlisted in Company B, First Maryland Potomac Brigade, United States Army and served over three years. He participated in the battles of Gettysburg, Winchester and many minor engagements. He was captured at Harper’s Ferry, paroled, and exchanged about six months later. At the close of the war he continued blacksmithing, and worked at his trade in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri. He afterward worked at Sedalia for his present employer, Mr. Oates, with whom he has been twenty years. In 1870 he came to this county and in 1875 he chose for his companion in life Miss Louisa McLain, a native of Steuben County, Ind., who bore him five children, four sons and one daughter. Mr. Pool has 150 acres of land, situated two miles from town, and upon this his family are now living, while he works at his trade in Cincinnati. He has made all his property by his own efforts and is a good, honest citizen. He is a Master Mason, is a Republican in politics, and his wife is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
