Below is a family biography from the book,  The History of Franklin County, Arkansas published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

N. W. Whitlock, retired farmer, and a resident of Section 15, where he has forty acres, is a native of South Carolina, born in October, 1817, and son of James and Betsey Whitlock, both of whom died when their son, N. W., was quite small. He was reared to a farm life, and this has been his occupation through life. In 1840, while in Georgia, he was married to Miss Dulina Burch, daughter of Jesse W. and Sallie Burch, and a native of North Carolina, born in 1825. They have eleven children born to this union, ten now living: J. H., a farmer, of Pleasant Hill; W. P., of Crawford County; Jesse T., of Crawford County; Mary J., wife of W. Nichols, of Franklin County; James M., of Franklin County; Elizabeth, deceased; Sallie, wife of George Jackson, of Crawford County; Josie, wife of John Love, of Crawford County; N. M. of Franklin County, and Samuel F., also of this county.
