Mount Vernon, Virginia, Tomb of George Washington, historic photo
An historic photo view of the tomb of George Washington, Mount Vernon, Virginia. After the death of Washington on December 14, 1799, his remains were placed within the family burial vault while waiting for the construction of a new tomb. In 1831, his remains were transferred to the new tomb facility pictured here. The sarcophagus holding Washington's remains can be seen behind the gates at the right of the structure. A view of inside the tomb showing a closeup of the sarcophagus can be seen in the photo below. Also shown below is the family burial vault where his remains were originally placed upon his death. The above photo is by Detroit Publishing Co., from 1902.
This photo from 1937 pictures the sarcophagus of Washington within the new burial vault. Note the shield design on the lid of the sarcophagus. The persons pictured here are representatives of the Rotary International organization. See the additional photo below.
This is the Washington family burial vault where his remains were kept until the new tomb was completed. Washington's remains were transferred to the new tomb in 1831.
