The crypt or grave of Shemp Howard, of The Three Stooges, Home of Peace Memorial Park, East Los Angeles, California.

The crypt or grave of Shemp Howard, of "The Three Stooges." Shemp was born as Samuel Horwitz on March 11, 1895, in Manhattan, New York. He was the third born of five sons. His two younger brothers were also Stooges: Moses "Moe"Howard born in 1897 and Jerome "Curly" Howard born in 1903.

Shemp Howard was one of the original Three Stooges in an vaudeville act along with Larry Fine and his brother, Moe Howard. He departed the act in 1932 for a solo acting career before the Three Stooges began filming the more well known series of film shorts. Shemp was replaced in the act by his brother, Curly, who quickly became known as the most popular of the Stooges. After Curly suffered a major stroke in 1946, Shemp returned to the group with the understanding that he would be only a temporary replacement until Curly had recovered and was able to return to the group. Curly never recovered and died on January 18, 1952. Shemp continued as a regular member of The Three Stooges until his own death on November 22, 1955 in Hollywood, California. His death was as a result of a sudden heart attack. He was 60 years old. Shemp had appeared in a total of 73 of the Three Stooges film shorts.

The remains of Shemp Howard are entombed in a crypt in the Home of Peace Mausoleum and Chapel within the Home of Peace Cemetery, East Los Angeles, California. The grave of Jerome "Curly" Howard is also in this cemetery. See the additional photos below.
