P. A. Langford, farmer and stock dealer of the First District of Sumner County, was born in Clay County, Tenn., in January, 1847, being one of nine children, three sons and five daughters living. The parents were Ervin F. and Pamelia (Gates) Langford. The father was of Irish descent, born in Tennessee in 1812, and was the son of Stephen Langford, a native of Virginia. He was married August 13, 1840, and spent his entire life in his native county, farming and dealing in stock. He was colonel in the militia. He died September 25, 1860. The mother was also a native of Tennessee, born November 14, 1825, and is still living in Clay County, near her birthplace, a devout member of the Christian Church. Our subject was raised and educated at home, and has good business capacity. February, 1867, he commenced merchandising at Butler’s Landing; in December, 1868, he went to Texas, and returned in about two years. May 10, 1876, he married Miss Alice, daughter of Van and Lucy Allen of Sumner County. They have two children: Frank and Irene. Mr. Langford remained in Clay County until 1883, when he moved to Sumner County, and purchased a farm of 155 acres finely improved, and desirably located, five miles east of Gallatin. Although Mr. Langford is comparatively a young man he is one of the most progressive farmers of Sumner County, and is extensively engaged in dealing in, and shipping stock to Southern points. He is a strong Democrat; his first presidential vote was cast for H. Seymour in 1868. Since 1871 he has been a member in good standing of the Masonic lodge. Mrs. Langford was born in Smith County, near Dickson’s Springs, in 1854. Her parents were both natives of the same county. Her father was of Irish extraction, being a son of Robert Allen, who for several terms was a member of Congress while living in Smith County. Her mother was a daughter of William Young, a native of Virginia, born in 1797, afterward a prominent and wealthy citizen of Smith County, Tenn.
