George M. Gillespie, farmer, and son of Jacob and Nellie (Graham) Gillespie, was born on the farm near Gallatin, Tn. Sumner County, in 1828, and is one of two children born to his parents. The father was born in 1773 in North Carolina, and came to Williamson County, Tenn., where he remained but a short time. He then came to Sumner County, and located where our subject now resides. He died here in 1864. The mother was born in 1790, in North Carolina, was of Irish descent, and died about 1866. Our subject received his education in the common schools of Sumner County, and remained with his parents as long as they lived. At the death of his father he came in possession of 600 acres of land, on which he is now living. In 1859 he married Harriet Jane Duffer, daughter of William and Rebecca Duffer. Mrs. Gillespie was born at Station Camp, seven miles west of Gallatin, in 1836. Eight children were the result of this union: Aldrich Oma (Mrs. James Bright), Belmont, Queen (Mrs. David Kerley), Susan D., William, Jacob, Thomas, George and James Graham. Oma, Bell, Queen and Susan are members of the Christian Church. Mr. Gillespie, by hard and careful work, has improved the farm, so that he has it in a good state of cultivation, with good fences and buildings. He is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote in 1848.
